Summer eXpression 17 takes seven young designers to Japan

With the support of Uminova eXpression, the young group of designers has previously exhibited at Formex and for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Team Sweden in Stockholm. Now the journey goes much further, namely to Tokyo and Japan.

- It has a rich design culture with much to inspire and learn from. It's a huge opportunity to show what the creative minds of the Umeå region are capable of," says Barbro Renkel, business coach at Uminova eXpression.

From 10-11 May, the Arctic Design of Sweden exhibition will be on display at the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo, Japan. The exhibition consists of designs produced by creators from Västerbotten. These include the everyday objects produced by the ten designers from Uminova eXpression's summer initiative Summer eXpression. Seven of them are going to Japan.

- In addition to the exhibition, we also take the opportunity to make study visits. One of them is Muji, a well-known Japanese brand that is sold at Åhléns in Sweden, for example. We want our young design talents to get as many ideas and creative stimulation from this trip as possible," says Barbro Renkel.

Uminova eXpression has also arranged a workshop with Musashino Art University to give the Swedish creators the opportunity to exchange experiences and inspiration with Japanese design students.

- It will be an exciting and developing exchange. There is certainly a lot we can learn from each other's design processes and cultures," says Barbro Renkel.

- We have been working on the exhibition since September, a great project to be part of, says Kjell Fornander, founder of Japanese Next Inc and the project's local agency partner. He continues:
- What we will also do is give participants the opportunity to learn from people who import, distribute and sell Scandinavian products in this market. A great source of inspiration.

One of the Summer eXpression participants going to Tokyo to exhibit her products is Marzieh Tangestani, a graphic designer and entrepreneur.

- I think designs from Japan and Sweden are quite close. It will be interesting to learn about more cultural worlds," she says.

The exhibition is a co-organization between Uminova eXpression and Krenova with the aim of highlighting and strengthening the creative and cultural industries in the region of northern Sweden.
