Competition encourages students to step outside their comfort zone

Competition encourages students to step outside their comfort zone

On 8 December it's time for the UMA Furniture Fair. It is a student-driven competition for students at Umeå School of Architecture. The aim is for students to develop their skills and understanding of craftsmanship, materials and furniture, as an architectural element. The ambition is for as many as possible to step out of their comfort zone and design and produce a piece of furniture.

- Apart from being a bit sad about not being able to participate myself, it's incredibly fun and impressive to see what people have managed to put together alongside, like, four hundred percent studies," says Jonas Eltes, one of the jury members.

The competition is being held for the second year in a row and this year's theme is "Object for lighting" where the task is to create an object that interacts with light in one way or another. On Wednesday 7 December, the jury met to judge. Jonas Eltes, representing eXpression, participated together with Maria Luna Nobile, Richard Conway and Håkan Hansson from the School of Architecture.

- Overall, I think it's the breadth, the unpretentious format and all the contributions that make counting so inspiring and fun! When it comes to judging, I'm personally a bit partial to the more extreme entries. For example, those that stand out in their simplicity, craftsmanship or quirkiness and still manage to maintain an interesting and unique design language," says Jonas Eltes

All the entries, together with the winners, will be presented at a vernissage in the entrance hall of the School of Architecture on Thursday 8 December.

UMA Furniture Fair is a student initiative by students Fredrika Lindvall, Axel Gillblad and Richard Lövby where Expression Umeå is a proud sponsor.
