With a passion for art and community, Benjamin Sientzoff has established himself as a central figure in Umeå's queer cultural life through Escarpin Productions.
Through events such as 'Club Bisous', he offers platforms where artists and audiences can meet in a safe and inspiring environment.
We took the opportunity to ask Benjamin a few questions, who is currently working on the new club venture.
1. What inspired you to start Escarpin Productions?
Basically, there are two things: the lack of queer safe spaces in Umeå and Norrland - and the fact that all major cities in Sweden have some kind of queer clubs where drag artists and other queer performers can perform, but not Umeå.
Through my volunteer work at RFSL Umeå, I could see the potential in both creating a safe space and offering a platform where queer artists can express themselves, grow and experiment.
2. How do you work to create inclusive and safe events for the queer community in Umeå?
It starts with the little things, like using the right pronouns and not assuming gender or sexuality. As for the venue itself, I book venues that are not open to the public, such as private bars or event halls - this ensures that only those who know about the event come.
I also work with partners who understand LGBTQIA+ issues and have clear anti-discrimination policies. Pride flags and other inclusive symbols are also important to create a welcoming atmosphere. Staff behaviour is crucial - they should be professional and respectful to everyone. And last but not least, I do a lot of community building and I always try to understand what the needs are.
3. What challenges have you faced as an organiser of queer cultural events in northern Sweden?
It's not just about queer events - there is a general lack of engagement. When it comes to queer initiatives, I think some people don't see the need or don't understand how important it is, especially in the current political climate. Some organisations might be afraid to take a stand, or think their values don't align with the kind of events I produce.
Two weeks ago, for example, I received the answer: "Unfortunately, it is not an event that is in line with our focus at the moment." But queer people exist all year round - not just during Pride parades.
4. How has the co-operation with eXpression Umeå affected the development of your company?
Being part of eXpression has helped me to understand the challenges I might face, and to structure my plan for Escarpin Productions. I have been able to meet other entrepreneurs who have travelled similar paths and faced similar challenges.
I also appreciate the coaching meetings with my coach Frida - it's always nice to share even small progress with someone who sees the big picture and can guide me further.
5. What are your future plans for Escarpin Productions and the queer cultural scene in Umeå?
I'm planning two major events during Umeå Pride in September: a new edition of Club Bisous and my first cabaret with international artists.
I am also working on an exhibition with a curator. And maybe - this is a dream right now because it requires a lot of preparation and the right partners - but I would like to produce a drag theatre show at the intersection of traditional theatre and drag, with a dose of underground queer culture.
But first, after the premiere of Club BisousI need to focus on setting the right legal structure for Escarpin Productions.
