Over the weekend, Greenlab brings together creatives and organisations in the eXpression Pop-In for Green Friday, a counter-movement to the over-consumption that characterises Black Friday. During the weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to mend broken clothes, sell and buy second-hand products, listen to talks and create music from recycled items, among other things.
The main aim of the Green Friday weekend is to encourage sustainable behaviours and offer inspiration in contrast to the behaviours that usually characterise Black Friday. Because although Black Friday offers customers huge discounts on products and services, it has encouraged overproduction and overconsumption, which is not sustainable for the world we live in.
-"We encourage people to look in their homes and closets for items that are no longer used and consider repair, resale, donation, recycling, upcycling before buying new," says Julia Sénécal, one of the founders of Greenlab, the business behind Green Friday.
Greenlab is a circular economy business. It is run by Umeå University students Julia Sénécal, Anthony Sorsa and Munashe Chivaura, who are all passionate about sustainable development. They connect business & design thinking to find solutions to today's linear economic challenges. They describe Greenlab as a design agency, business consultant, event planner, collaborator and most importantly an innovator. This weekend they have gathered creators and organisations close to them who are also passionate about sustainable development.
"I hope that many Umeå residents will take the opportunity to visit us this weekend to be inspired and act more sustainably," says Oskar Riby, business coach at the business incubator eXpression Umeå, who has followed Greenlab in the start-up of its operations.
In cooperation with the property owner Mofab, eXpression Umeå has been given the opportunity to allow new entrepreneurs to take place in the city centre. The purpose of eXpression Pop-in is to challenge the traditional trading place and to showcase and test new business models.
