"Everything just stopped. The sounds spread across Medal Plaza as a silent carpet embedded everything. It was indescribable." That's how acclaimed Umeå artist Natalie Carrion described performing live during the medal ceremony last week in Östersund during the World Biathlon Championships with a joke on the town hall steps.
The acclaimed Umeå artist Natalie Carrion was in Östersund last week during the World Biathlon Championships, both to cheer Sweden to a bronze medal and to participate in the medal ceremonies and lead the winners on the catwalk towards the podium.
Ahead of Thursday's medal ceremony at Medal Plaza, both winners and presenters were waiting inside Östersund Town Hall, soon it was time for Norway to get its gold and Sweden its bronze. But for performer Natalie Carrion, it wasn't just a wait, as she usually does, she sang out loud.
"The acoustics inside the town hall were fantastic, so I couldn't help but sing"
She walked around singing and met a man who said a bit jokingly "But aren't you going to sing tonight?", "Yes" Carrion replied "When do we go?"
That led to Natalie performing 30 minutes later in front of millions of television viewers for the medal ceremony on the steps of the town hall.
"It was an overwhelming feeling and an incredible experience. People were so charged up, dancing, singing and waving flags. Then the clock at the town hall showed 3 minutes to go, and I turned around and yodeled "Gulahallat Eatnamiin: We speak earth" by Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska. Everything just stopped. The sounds spread across Medal Plaza as a silent carpet embedded everything. It was indescribable."
Carrion also received considerable attention from Swiss and Slovenian companies, among others. "I've said I'm going international. Then I should stand for it too!"
The 22 year old artist Natalie Carrion is currently releasing the EP Banana River which has been well received in both Sweden and Norway. It's pop with Sami and Caribbean roots, unique and timely. The music can be found on streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal and Itunes.
