MALENA HJERPE - THE PATTERN MAKER WITH THE POWER TO CHANGE AND IMPROVE

With a new pattern design software that minimises unnecessary material consumption and a goal that the garment should fit so well that you will always want to wear it, Malena is taking pattern design to the next level.

- My name is Malena Hjerpe and my company is Umeå formgivning och mönster AB.

She also works as a freelance pattern designer, helping companies to develop patterns and make sample collections. In addition, she also teaches courses at the Citizen's School aimed at the general public in draping, patterns and sewing.

She is currently working on her own collection of sewing patterns aimed at hobby sewing customers under the name Pattern by Malena, a company she started when she moved here to Umeå.

- I saw quite quickly that there was a market for this kind of business, which is great. The patterns come in PDF format, so it should be easy to print out and put together your pattern pieces and then sew them together. There will be patterns designed for baby, children's and women's clothing," says Malena.

Malena sees sustainability as a natural part of her work and believes that we should consume less and when we do consume, we should do it better and more consciously. Once we have consumed, we should use the clothes and products for longer.

- From my perspective, the most important thing is that the fit is good. Today, most people have one or more garments that don't fit properly and are therefore not comfortable to wear, and they end up at the back of the wardrobe. It's the biggest waste of resources to produce and buy something that isn't used," says Malena.

She says that even if it is an environmentally friendly fabric, it is still a waste of resources if it is not used.

- My goal is that the garment should be so good that you will always want to use it, keep using it until it wears out.

She is also implementing a programme in her work that allows her to sew garments in 3D and try them on an avatar, saving resources and time and getting a better result faster.

Malena has now moved into the eXpressions premises and is looking forward to taking part in training courses and getting a better foundation for her business.

- For me it is important to be surrounded by creative people and that is why I applied to eXpression. Here I will be able to share and learn from the successes, challenges, thoughts and ideas of others.
