Prototype Week:
Litigation Road 2024

At the end of the summer, a group of design and architecture students and entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to contribute to a safer and more inclusive Umeå. Over seven intense days, they mixed their creativity with the latest technology, resulting in a variety of exciting prototypes.

The assignment, which focused on developing Tvistevägen in Umeå, challenged the participants to think in new ways and create solutions that strengthen security and inclusion in the neighbourhood.

The week was organised in collaboration with Umeå Energi, LF Västerbotten and Campus X.

Connect Disputes

Connect Tviste promotes a vibrant, inclusive community where students feel a strong sense of belonging. Through shared spaces, services such as the Tviste Bank, and support from a person they have chosen to call a Housemaster, the concept encourages community, resource sharing and mutual support. It's more than just accommodation - Connect Tviste creates a home where students can grow, organise themselves and leave a lasting impression.

LIGHTING CONCEPT FOR THE TOWPATH

The lighting concept for Tvistevägen transforms dark and closed environments into safe and inviting places. By focussing on accessibility, interaction and seasonal adaptation, a dynamic and flexible lighting system is created that strengthens both social and physical security all year round. In addition, the light points have the function of inviting to community. A concept that transforms Tvistevägen into a vibrant and safe meeting place.

TVISTE

Tviste's vision is to create a central hub where safety, inclusion and community are at the centre. By adding geometric building elements, the vision is that students themselves will be able to design and utilise the outdoor environments in the best possible way. The Tvistevägen project also focuses on transforming unutilised spaces. By adding a cosy coffee room, a flexible living room and a dynamic meeting place, spaces for studying, relaxing and spontaneous meetings are created. Tviste is the place where students and residents together form a vibrant and sustainable community.

Using the design process as a working method

Prototype uses a structured design process to take participants from idea to a final solution. The process is divided into different stages where participants progressively develop their ideas, test them and present their results.

It is based on design thinking methodology and is practically orientated, focusing on understanding user needs and generating creative solutions.

The process starts with introduction and site visit to provide an understanding of the project context. Participants then collect user insights through interviews, which provides the basis for the next step - idea generation. During this phase, many potential solutions are developed and then evaluated to select the best concept in delimitation and choice of concept. Then a first prototype, which tests the chosen idea in practice. Finally, the work and solution are presented during an open presentation.
