They go from idea to finished product during Summer eXpression

The 10 students accepted for this year's edition of Summer eXpression 2022 have now been announced. The programme is aimed at design and architecture students and is run in close collaboration with experts and local manufacturers. Summer eXpression is an intensive programme that runs for 7 weeks during the summer and ends with an opening and product launch at Designtorget in the autumn.

Admission to the programme requires creative ability, an eye for detail and a demonstrated drive and willingness to develop their entrepreneurial skills. A design assignment is submitted anonymously, reviewed by knowledgeable tutors who assess the creative height.

One of the supervisors of the programme is Margot Barolo, product designer and head of the Form programme at Beckmans School of Design in Stockholm.

During Summer eXpression, you will gain knowledge and experience that you can rarely read about. By combining entrepreneurship and production in a real case, theory is combined with practical knowledge. It strengthens their professional role as designers to understand how the production process works at all stages, how materials and technology as well as communication and relationships are crucial for a successful result," says Margot Barolo and continues:

Whether they choose to start a business or produce their own, they will take away insights that they will enjoy and that will help them for a long time to come.

Part of the programme is to build networks and to get to know the local manufacturers around Västerbotten. Each participant will also have the chance to freely explore different materials and based on sketches and close dialogue with manufacturers and design experts, they will prototype their product.

Emelie Aktanius who is studying at the School of Architecture here in Umeå, is one of this year's participants.

Summer eXpression is something I've admired from afar for four years, and now I finally applied. I'm super excited and it's going to be so much fun to develop with the help of so many competent and driven people during this well-thought-out programme," says Emelie Aktanius
