International venture in new alter ego

International venture in new alter ego

Umeå artist Magda Andersson is going international with the help of a newly launched crowdfunding campaign. Wearing her shadow self Magda Novels, the multi-artist explores new perspectives of her artistry. Her sights are set on a new album, music videos and a release tour. How far is it enough? Yes, it will be up to the so-called hills.

For many years I have wanted to try writing in English but it has been difficult to get started. By taking on a new persona and letting her express herself, I've been able to loosen up. She is as much me but from a different perspective. It allows me to explore new sides of myself and dare to be more revealing. That came partly with the language, says Magda Andersson.

How does Magda Novels differ from Magda Andersson musically?

As usual, there's a lot of focus on vocals and lyrics, but I've drawn more from Americana and rock n' roll in terms of sound ideals and tonality. So it's different genre-wise because I usually move in Swedish singer-songwriter and folk music. I still think you'll recognize yourself.

How did crowdfunding come about?

I really like DIY (do it yourself) and building community. There's a lot in the music business I don't like. Going down this road will be the opposite of that. It's about the music and meeting people. I think it feels less hard and more human to do a campaign this way," Magda concludes.
