They win the Golden Seed Award 2023

Solar Literacy and Liv are this year's winners of the Golden Seed Award. The award recognises graduate students at Umeå Institute of Design who distinguish themselves by working with social, economic and especially ecological sustainability. The Golden Seed Award is awarded by the UID Climate group at Umeå Institute of Design.

Here are this year's winners!

Solar Literacy by Anna Puchalska, MFA Interaction Design.

The internet is rapidly growing in complexity and has an increasingly negative environmental and societal impact. While heating and lighting are concrete examples of energy consumption, internet use is not perceived in the same way. Glow OS is an operating system that enables individuals and communities to customise online activities with intermittent solar power to accelerate the transition to a fossil fuel-free internet.

Live by Jovan Vulic, MFA Advanced Product Design

Liv is a labour/pre-labour training solution designed to train both midwives and non-medical staff in refugee camps. The concept reveals what happens inside the birth canal during the training to give the user a better understanding of what it takes to conduct a successful birth.

The Golden Seed Award is a prestigious prize awarded by the UID Climate group to recognise and reward graduating students at Umeå Institute of Design for their outstanding work in sustainable design. It is an opportunity to celebrate and promote the future talent in sustainable design and raise awareness of the importance of integrating sustainability in all areas of design. This initiative aims to inspire and educate future designers to create positive change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
